LOOP: A Unique Blend of Tradition and Modernism

Creating a Fusion of Chinese Philosophy and Environmental Protection

River flows eastward and leaves fall in profusion. The scene of “four hundred eight temples built in the Southern Dynasties bathing in misty rain” (Southern Spring by Du Mu in Tang Dynasty) has long been buried in oblivion in history, but people in Jinling still take delight in talking about the legend on “cloud light”, associating it with the gift of nature Yuhau Stone.

Cultural inheritance is another highlight of this design. After thinking seriously about the enterprise culture of Zendai group, the designer incorporates simple ideas in modern times into abstract Chinese elements, creating the uniqueness of space using fashionable ways. For instance, “deep well” modelling is adopted in the upward side of sand table. Simplified upright modeling is painted with vermeil emulsion paint, which is inspired by the Chinese character “回, implying concepts such as “home” and “reincarnation” and embodying the essence of Chinese culture.

LOOP, designed by TU PO CHUN, is an interior design project that seamlessly blends tradition and modernism. The three-floor oval-shaped building, located in Nanjing, China, serves as a real-estate sales center, housing meeting rooms, VIP rooms, and offices for staff. With a total area of approximately 800 square meters, the design showcases the fusion of traditional Chinese philosophy and the concept of environmental protection.

The design team, led by TU PO CHUN and WANG CHIHYUN, faced several challenges in realizing the vision of LOOP. One of the key challenges was to create a sense of returning home for potential buyers. To achieve this, the team ingeniously applied a sensemaking approach inspired by Chinese literature. The word "returning" was metaphorically expressed through the multi-layered combination and overlap of air-conditioning outlets, light belts, light membranes, and red coatings on the ceiling right above the model sand table.

The design also incorporates elements of nature, with transparent glass surrounding the first and second floors. The outdoor terrace pavement extends into the indoor area, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor landscapes. This integration creates a harmonious and inviting space for potential buyers to explore.

LOOP is not only visually captivating but also environmentally conscious. The design utilizes materials such as marble, paint, stainless steel, artificial stone, and glass. These materials not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the space but also align with the concept of environmental protection.

The project, which started in April 2014 and concluded in May 2015, showcases the meticulous research and attention to detail undertaken by the design team. The misplaced space on the first and second floors was strategically designed to blend the indoor and outdoor landscapes, creating a seamless transition between the two.

LOOP has been recognized for its excellence in design, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design of LOOP integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its users.

LOOP is a testament to the power of simplicity and the fusion of tradition and modernism. Through its thoughtful design and attention to detail, it creates a space that not only captures the essence of Chinese culture but also provides a welcoming environment for potential buyers.
